'Cloud Environment Creation Failed' error when launching custom docker images Answered

When starting cloud environments, some users using custom Docker images that extend from an older Terra base image have run into the error message "Cloud Environment Creation Failed: Jupyter, Welder failed to start after 10 minutes." Some users are also experiencing this issue when simply trying to use an older base image.

This error occurs because the older base images are not cached so it takes longer to build the environment from scratch.  As a workaround, Terra Support has been recommending that users extend their custom images from the latest available Terra base image.

However, we have realized that this solution hurts reproducibility and may not work for all users that are intentionally using older images for a specific tool/package version. We are working with the Interactive Analysis product manager and engineering team to find the best solution for this issue.

As part of this effort, we are asking that any users who are impacted by this issue provide the following information so we can craft a solution that will be the most helpful to users of the platform:

  • Are you currently experiencing issues or have you faced challenges in using Terra due to the continuous release of new docker images and loss of support for older ones? If so, why?
  • What older base image(s) do you want to use?
  • Are you trying to use the older base images as they are or are you trying to use a custom Docker based on the older image(s)?
  • Do you plan on moving to a newer image in the future? If so, when do you think this would occur? If not, please tell us why

Your input is greatly appreciated! We will add this thread as we have updates on the development of a solution. Please "Follow" this page to get an email whenever a new comment is added.
