Part 1: Set up billing and data access in Terra

If you've never used controlled AnVIL data before, follow these instructions to set up an account on anvil.terra.bio (or, equivalently, app.terra.bio) and link it to a Google Cloud Billing account. Billing setup is required to analyze data in Terra and to download AnVIL data to local/institutional systems.

For an overview of the process, see Finding and using AnVIL data

For the next steps, see Part 2: Search and select data in the AnVIL Data Explorer or Part 3: Export data to Terra for analysis

1.1. Register a user account with Terra

The first step in setting up Terra is to register a Google user account in Terra, AnVIL’s analysis platform. Follow step-by-step instructions here: How to register on Terra (Google SSO).

Before you register

The instructions below assume you have created or already have a Google G-Suite/Workspace account (via your institutional email). If you don't already have a Gmail or an institutional G Suite/Workspace email account, see Setting up a Google account with a non-Google email for instructions.

Don’t know if your institutional account is a Google G-Suite account?Try logging into google.com in an incognito Chrome window with your institution email and password. If you are able to log in, your email is a Google account.

1.2. Set up a Google Cloud account and link to Terra

Flow of steps to set up cloud billing in AnVIL. 1. Set up a Google Cloud Billing account. 2. Link Google cloud billing account to Terra 3. Create a Terra Billing project to fund workspaces.

Instructions and details

1.3. Enable access to controlled AnVIL data

Access to controlled data in AnVIL is managed by dbGaP and/or the Data Use Oversight System (DUOS).

Only using open-access data?If you only require open-access data, you can skip this step and go directly to Part 2: Search and select data in the AnVIL Data Explorer.

Mechanisms to enable access

  • Via dbGaP
Enable dbGaP access by linking your NIH account in Terra (enables access to controlled data granted by dbGaP in both Terra and the AnVIL Data Explorer). For step-by-step instructions, see Access controlled-data by linking your NIH account in Terra.
  • Via DUOS
Access to AnVIL datasets provided by the Data Use Oversight System (DUOS) is automatically enabled in both Terra and the AnVIL Data Explorer. Note that you might want to use DUOS for access if your data has not yet been indexed in the AnVIL Data Explorer. To learn more, see Part 2

What to expect

Once you link your NIH account, you will be able to see all datasets you have dbGaP or DUOS permission to use in the AnVIL Data Explorer and Terra.
