Rstudio unstable
Hi All,
I'm using the Community Maintained Rstudio environment in Terra and keep running into different errors. These errors tend to crash the cloud environment or produce endless messages to the console that require me to restart the session. I cannot make a reproducible example. Errors can happen for simple commands such as 2+2, which is bizarre.
Do you have any general advice about getting consistent, stable Rstudio sessions in Terra? I need to work in Terra to have access to some specific datasets, but I am finding the process of working in Rstudio specifically to be painful and, given the need to reboot my cloud session multiple times a day, quite slow. I'll reply to this comment with some screenshots of the various error messages I'm getting and my curent computing environment.
thank you,
Katie
Thank you!

Sorry to added images in a separate comment, but adding photos to the orignal post was deleting my text (so odd!). Here's my current computing environment:

Hi Katie Saund,
Thanks for writing in. We'll take a look at your question and get back to you as soon as we can.
Best,
Samantha
Thanks, Samantha!
A small update: this morning I started a fresh computing session and ran only the command
and got the error message in the picture below in my console repeatedly and then the session crashed (the screen where a square frowny face with "x" eyes appears).
Hi Katie Saund,
Sorry for the delayed response. Can you clarify what you mean when you say you've rebooted your session? Do you mean the R session, or the cloud environment?
If you are rebooting the cloud environment, are you deleting the persistent disk along with it? I ask because I created a new RStudio cloud environment and was able to run some of the commands you've used without issue.
Best,
Samantha
Hi Samantha,
Most of the time I only need to restart the R session. Sometime, however I need to restart the cloud environment (pause it and then restart it). I am not deleting the persistent disk when I'm restarting the cloud environment.
The instability of the R session is quite frustrating because I cannot reliably reproduce the bad behavior nor reliably resolve it quickly. Sometimes it seems like R starts having issues frequently when I need to read or write data to my workspace bucket using gsutil, but that's not always the start of the problem. I've been using R and Rstudio for years and working via Terra makes R crash so much more frequently than I've ever experienced before. My R session is crashing multiple times a day. Do other users also have issues with R/Rstudio crashing frequently in Terra? Is it just me having problems?
Thanks,
Katie
Hi Katie,
Apologies for the delayed response. Our engineers have tried to reproduce the errors in RStudio but have not been able to. Are you still experiencing instability in your RStudio environment? If it crashes again, can you share your Google project ID and cluster name so our engineers can take a look at the logs to troubleshoot?
Best,
Samantha
