Upcoming changes to AutoClass Answered

Hi Terra,

I originally posted the following message on this forum post but I think that I need to create a new thread because it is marked as "Answered". I wrote,

Google released an announcement today that AutoClass will require opt-in to enable Coldline and Archive storage. Can the Terra team update users about how this will impact workspaces, especially since AutoClass is enabled by default?

In their email, they added,

Opt-out of colder classes: Opting out of colder storage classes limits Autoclass to transitioning objects solely between Standard and Nearline. Upon opting out, all objects in Coldline and Archive will be transferred to Nearline. Opting out is free of charge until January 29, 2024. However, opting out after this timeframe will incur Class A operations at Standard rate for moving objects from Coldline and Archive to Nearline.

So, if Terra chooses to opt-out workspaces that have objects in lower classes, users could face unexpected large charges upon interacting with archived data. What is Terra's plan for this upcoming change?

    Hi Brendan Reardon,

Please see the message below from our Product team.

Based on the announcement by Google for upcoming pricing changes to Autoclass, https://cloud.google.com/storage/docs/release-notes#July_17_2023 we do not plan to make any changes to Terra's use of Autoclass and plan to continue to support the use of Cold and Archive storage for the following reasons:

    1. Before Autoclass was available, all objects in all Terra buckets were Standard storage class and subject to the same fees and operation charges being proposed by these Autoclass pricing changes. From the user's perspective, they're still getting the cost benefits of files going to Cold and Archive storage. Even if some colder files are referenced and result in Class A operations, it should not be more expensive than it historically was in Terra prior to Autoclass.

    2. Since Autoclass will soon (hopefully) be available to turn on/off for existing buckets, we can add more controls in the Terra UI for users to configure their own Autoclass behavior going forward.

    Best,
    Samantha

Amazing! Thank you, Samantha (she/her). So, to be explicit, Terra will continue to use AutoClass to move inactive files into cold and then archive storage?

    Yes, that's correct.
