Each billing project in Terra is backed by a GCP Billing account. There may be times when you need to prevent that Terra billing project from incurring any costs moving forward.
This article gives instructions on how to do that by disabling the Terra billing project. Note that when you do this, you will lose access to any data stored in workspaces created with those Billing projects. Google does not report how long they retain data that isn't being paid for, but they reserve the right to delete that data at any time.
What happens when you disable a workspace billing project
When you visit a workspace with a billing project that's been disabled, you'll discover that you are no longer able to perform certain actions. These include
- Viewing data or notebooks stored in the workspace bucket, or other buckets in the same billing project
- Starting a cloud environment
- Submitting a workflow

Some things to remember about removing/disabling billing
You need to have “Owner” (Billing account administrator) permission on the GCP Billing account in order to follow these instructions.
If you are not able to follow the directions below, or do not see the options in the screenshots, it is likely because you are not the GCP account owner. You will need to ask the owner for admin privileges to disable billing. This may be the case, for example, if you are using STRIDES or third party resellers such as Onix.
This will impact all workspaces created under this Billing project
It will not be possible to access any data stored or notebooks in the workspace buckets or analysis tools.
How to disable billing projects
To be completely sure you will not be accruing charges in workspaces you created in Terra under a Billing project, you will need to disable billing for the Billing project.
You will do this in GCP console, and it will take effect immediately. You need to be the GCP Billing Account Owner or Administrator to follow these steps.
- Log into Google as a admin or owner in the Billing account that funded the Billing project you are trying to disable.
- Go to the Google Cloud Console at https://console.cloud.google.com/home:
- Go to Billing overview:
- Select “Account management” from the bottom left:
You will see all projects created in Terra under this Billing account, no matter what user created it.
- Click on the three vertical dots beside the billing project you want to disable and select “Disable”:
Once you disable billing, users won't be able to start a workflow or notebook in any workspace created with this project effective immediately.
