There are times when you may need to change the Google Billing account associated with a Billing project in Terra (note that the Billing project can be funding many workspaces). An example would be if there was a change to the funding source for the project. If you have OWNER permissions for the project, and are a Billing account user, you can take the following steps to change the Billing account.
Changing billing: Step-by-step instructions
- Go to the Billing page from the main navigation at the top left of any page in Terra
- Select a Billing Project from the list on the left hand side of the screen
Note that you will only see billing projects if you have owner or user permission on the GCP Billing account! If you don't see the Billing account, see the troubleshooting guide below.
- Click the "Change Account" button. You will see a list of all the Google Billing accounts you have access to. Select the one you want to use with the project and click OK.
Your project is now funded by the chosen account!
|Generally, this is a permissions problem due to one of two issues 1) you do not have sufficient (or any) permission on the GCP Billing account or 2) the user (Terra) ID is different from the GCP ID on the Billing account.

How to set up a new GCP Billing account
This lets you have full control over your Billing and is a good option if you are comfortable working in the GCP console. You can use a personal credit card or bank account (and get reimbursed, if your work on Terra is grant-funded) or institutional credit card or other account.
If you have been using a third-party reseller, see step-by-step instructions for how to set up a GCP Billing account in this article.
