Note: The Free Credits program has been suspended as of July 2, 2020. Please follow this service notification article to get the latest updates.
1. Free Credits Overview
In order to create or clone a new workspace in Terra, process data with workflows or analyze data in notebooks, you must have access to at least one Terra Billing Project. The free credits program gives newcomers to the platform an opportunity to try it out at no cost. To receive free credits, complete the initial registration, log in, click "sign up for free credits", and accept the Terms and Conditions.
As soon as you do this, you will be able to see the free credits Billing Project in your billing section, with your role as "owner". The free credits program begins once you accept the Terms and Conditions, and will expire either after 60 days or after you have used $300 worth of credits, whichever happens first.
2. What can I do with my free credits in Terra?
Your free credits billing project will cover all costs accrued in Terra, including egress, compute, and storage. Use of the free credits is not restricted to specific pipelines. Read this blog post for further detail around what costs money. Select the free credits billing project whenever prompted to clone or create a workspace. You will be notified via email when you have used 50%, 75%, and 90% of your credits to ensure you have time to continue to work in Terra by creating your own billing account, or egress your data files prior to credit expiration.
3. How long will my free credits be available?
Free credits will begin once you click “Start Trial” in the banner in the Terra UI. You will have $300 of credits to use on any egress, compute, and storage costs. Credits will be available for sixty days, or until you have used up all $300 available in your billing project, whichever comes first.
4. How do I track how much I’ve spent?
Go to the Google console summary page at https://console.cloud.google.com/home/ to view your billing invoice month-to-date for your free credits billing project.
You will also receive a notification via email from Onix once you have used 50%, 75% and 90% of your free credits.
5. What happens once the credits expire?
Once your free credits run out or expire (after 60 days), your free credits Billing Project will no longer be funded. This means you will not be able to create new workspaces under this Project, or launch any bulk or interactive analyses in workspaces you created with free credits. The workspaces you created will still be available, but the files in the Google buckets (data you moved or generated through analysis) will be inaccessible. This is because the credits covered the cost of storage, compute, and egress in the Google Cloud Platform.
6. How can I upgrade my free credits?
If you use free credits to jump-start an analysis that you want to access later, you will need to upgrade your free credits by creating and linking a Google Billing Account to the free credits Project before your credits run out.
Note that you can reactivate an expired free credits Billing Project by logging into Google Cloud Console (https://console.cloud.google.com), going to Billing, and selecting upgrade.
Set up a Google Billing Account (follow step by step instructions here)
Switch the Funding for your free-credits billing Project to the Google Billing Account
Note: Your Terra Project name will stay the same (i.e. fccredits-cobalt-amber-1234)
2.1. Go to the Google Cloud Console and click “Select a project” at the top of the screen. Choose the billing project that starts with “fccredits-xxx-xxx-xxxx.”
2.2. Click the hamburger menu on the top left (three horizontal lines) and scroll down to choose "Billing". Click “Go to linked billing account”
2.3. Click the three dots and choose “Change billing account.” The new Google Billing Account should display in the dropdown menu.
2.4. Click “Set Account.” A Google error may result, saying “You don’t have permission to edit the permissions of the selected resource.” You can ignore this error. This error may show up if your Google Billing Account permissions are limited (i.e. if you are using a reseller such as the one we use for the free credits program).
To make sure the transition was successful, log back into the console following the steps above and make sure the new billing account is listed.
