What we're solving

Users need to see workspace costs across billing projects to identify what workspaces are costing them the most money. 

The primary piece of feedback that we’ve gotten is that for larger use cases, a top 10 workspace spend report at the billing project level isn't sufficient. There are use cases where users are responsible for managing costs across dozens of billing projects and hundreds of workspaces.

Users are resorting to spreadsheets to manage costs, which requires a lot of back and forth between Google, the spreadsheets, and Terra. Some users have even developed their own tools to manage their costs. This results in significant overhead being spent on project managing the platform on top of the actual science.

What's changing for you

This feature is scoped to improve spend reports in three ways

1. The billing project’s workspaces list page will show the costs for all workspaces in that billing project, sortable by spend and searchable by Google Project ID.

2. The existing spend report for a billing project will show costs over time, aggregated daily to observe how costs are trending.

3. A new Consolidated Spend Report at the top of the billing projects list will show the costs for all workspaces you have Owner or Project Owner access to. This report shows all costs associated with a workspace, regardless of the billing source, sortable by spend and searchable by Google Project ID.

Benefits to the user experience

Users will be able to better manage their costs across multiple workspaces, and more easily see which workspaces are costing them money without having to navigate outside of the platform.

Try it Out

Make sure to enable spend reporting first!!Your billing project must have spend reporting enabled to see costs within Terra. See the How to set up spend reporting for workflows in Terra documentation article for more details.

    As of 1/15/25, the Consolidated Spend Report mentioned in #3 is now also available behind the Improved Spend Reports feature. A new Consolidated Spend Report at the top of the billing projects list will show the costs for all workspaces you have Owner or Project Owner access to, regardless of billing project, sortable by spend and searchable by Google Project ID.
